Moniliasis

Abstract
Moniliasis is an acute, sub acute or chronic mycotic infection, which may involve any part of the
-body, due to Candida albicans.
Candida albicans is now generally believed by many workers to be an only pathogenic organism of Candida species comprising about 30.
Moniliasis may be divided into the following four types:
1) The common variety of Candidiasis affecting the skin,
2) monilial granuloma, 3) "endocrine" candidiasis, and 4) systemic candidiasis.
Candida albicans is practically nonpathogenic when presented with completely normal human tissues. There must be some abnormalities in the host, either local or systemic, which are present previously for this organism to be able to contribute to or cause disease.
Neither clinical nor experimental observations suggest keratinolytic powers for Candida albicans. The limitation of this organism to the stratum corneum and its inability to destroy hair and nail indicate that it takes its substance from water soluble components of the skin.
